The Kampala city traders are set to resume work after a one-day strike which was caused by the cancellation of a scheduled meeting with the president. The traders under their respective associations, KACITA and FUTA had a meeting early morning with Prime Minister Hon. Robinah Nabanjja, and a set of resolutions was agreed on.

According to the Prime Minister, Hon Robinah Nabanjja, opening the shops to work was one of the first priorities and also meeting the president was considered although no specified date was given.

” The update is that the president will meet the traders at an appropriate date and I believe the president will get a date and meet the traders., secondly we also agreed to let the shops be open starting from tomorrow. There are people who are known as kifeesi who have been scaring traders from accessing their shops and that those should be dealt with by police” Hon Robina Nabanjja said while addressing parliament.

However, it is on record that the traders are striking citing high taxation on imported goods , and the introduction of the Electronic Fiscal Invoicing and Receipting solution (EFRIS).

Furthermore, the local traders also feel abandoned by their government since many foreigners have been favored to get government contracts which yield a lot of profits unlike them.

Some foreigners have also started participating in doing odd jobs and lack working permits, the odd jobs that should have been preserved for ordinary Ugandans, and many other reasons.

According to the spokesperson of KACITA, Mr. Issa Ssekito, EFRIS should be scrapped because many of the traders can not use it given that they lack the basic knowledge of calculating and operating the machine.

“Many of our traders are school dropouts and can not even understand basic English language. How do you expect them to operate a machine for EFRIS?”  He asked.
