Hon. Joel Bisekezi Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), proposal to boycott the regional plenary sessions which are expected to commence in the respective regions has been defied by a section of Members of Parliament representing areas from the Northern region.
The Parliamentary sessions which are to start from Gulu, and rotate to other regions, are expected to attract many local citizens and have a feel of getting in touch with their leaders.
Although parliament regional sessions will be expensive and create a heavy burden on the taxpayer, many of the members of parliament have not supported the Leader of the Opposition’s decision to boycott.
According to Hon.Father Onen, the leader of the opposition should lead by example by reducing on his security detail because that also wastes taxpayers’ money.
” Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi moves in a convoy wherever he goes and is guarded by over eight security personnel. The security personnel are paid with taxpayers’ money. In other countries like Kenya, the leader of the opposition has only a lead car! ” he remarked.
” The office of the Leader Of the Opposition spends eight million shillings per day, what do they use that money for? ” Hon Father Onen asked
However, the Leader Of the Opposition, Hon Joel Ssenyonyi, held a press confress at his office to defend his decision and shed light on why he objected to the parliamentary regional sessions.
According to Hon Joel Ssenyonyi, the program of regional parliament sessions is very expensive and a total waste of resources because it will cost over five billion shillings per session.
This money would be used to facilitate in service delivery which directly impacts on the livelihoods of their people and the areas they stay.
