Former Ugandan presidential press secretary Joseph Tamale Mirundi has been remembered by Woman MP Mukono district, Hon. Betty Nambooze Bakireke, for his leadership of the Uganda Journalists Association (UJA).
Nambooze praised Mirundi for his role in challenging a rule that required journalists to have a degree, which was successfully overturned.
The rule would permit a Diploma holder to be an associate of the forum which they found a move to silence journalists and individuals from telling their stories to the public
However, she noted that Mirundi died feeling disillusioned with the government and its mafias, whom he accused of poisoning him.
“The Tamale Mirundi I know is different from the one you saw. Especially the one who used to be the president of UJA. He was instrumental and vocal in the fight against a rule that had been formed that required a person practicing journalism to have a degree. He fought it until he was successful”, Hon. Betty Nambooze Bakireke said in an interview
She added that she and Tamale Mirundi were the pioneers of the “Ebimeeza” political shows and later moved on when she joined DP as the party spokesperson whereas Tamale joined President Museveni as his press secretary.
She also recounted an election when Tamale contested for the Member of Parliament position but failed to make it to parliament.
