Sammy Okanya, comedian and activist, has been granted a cash bail of Shs. 500,000 by the Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate.
Da Mighty Family Stand-Up comedian had been charged with a case of ‘common nuisance’ and remanded to Luzira prison during the #March2Parliament protests which took place in July.
Sammy Okanya was sent to Luzira for two weeks after he had been arraigned in court in the absence of his lawyers.
At the time, the Attoney General and Chief Migstrate were the only people present in court since he was just sneaked in for his case hearing.
Following the goverment prosecutor’s statement in court today, a date has been set which Sammy’s case hearing will start.
The case hearing is set to commence on the 5th of September 2024 at Buganda Road Court after the state prosecutor told court that he is done with the investigations into the matter.
To earn the bail, he had been asked to leave his National Identity card and Passport in court.
His three sureties (mother, uncle, and brother) were requested to also stand a non-cash bond of Shs 2m each which they obliged too.
