China Town: Ugandan traders upset with new competition

A section of Ugandan traders have expressed their frustration to the government after a new entrant in the business market ‘ China Town’ was allowed to operate.

This is because the retailer sold the same products as Ugandan traders however at a much lower price or cheaper rate attracting many clients from all over the country.

Surprisingly the same products would cost a fortune if they were to be imported by a Ugandan trader and when all the costs like taxes, and shipping are cleared.

Something many traders believe is unfair competition which is going to kill or destroy the local market. Many traders believe that it is likely that China Town is directly linked to the manufacturers hence the low prices of the products.

On its maiden opening, many clients could not believe their eyes on what they saw when most of the products where being sold at almost half price compared to those sold in the local shops or supermarket.

” Imagine I came from Masaka city to reach here. But I have bought a Tv at every low price and a fridge. I need more items for my house to look good. Am going to call my friends to also come and join me so that they can buy these items.” an excited client said.

According to John Kabanda, the president of FUTA, a traders association, they want the Government to intervene with a law of competition because it will help to curb on situations like this where a big retailer is competing with the small scale businesses of local traders.
