NEMA evicts hundreds of wetland encroachers in Nansana Ganda

The residents of Nansana Ganda in Wakiso and Lubigi a Kampala surbub were left in tears after the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) embarked on a very serious campaign to evict all illegal squatters in the wetland catchment areas.

Before the beginning of the campaign, the National Environment Authority held meetings with the residents and sent letters warning and informing them to remove all their property and shift to a better place.

However, the residents denied of any knowledge of the information from the National Environment Management Authority and accused the government body of not informing them in advance.

Many properties worth millions of shillings were destroyed including houses, churches, shops, and rentals which have been a reliable source of income to their owners.

” My house and property have been destroyed, I don’t know where to go, oh my God,” Kamya a resident cried out as he looked on while bulldozers were breaking into his house.

So far,  one person has also been reported dead after he learned of the news that his investment, a taxi park, had been destroyed by NEMA.

According to the National Management spokesperson, Mr. William Lubuulwa, the residents were informed but later relaxed to take action. They believed it was impossible to be evicted because some had been authorized by local leaders and had forged documents to support their stay in the area.

Many of these victims have spent so many years on the encroached swamp without permission from the government body.

NEMA

National Environment Management Authority is a semi (NEMA) is a semi-autonomous body established in May 1995 and charged with the responsibility of coordinating, monitoring, regulating, and supervising the environmental management in the country.

NEMA spearheads the development of environmental policies, laws, and regulations standards, and guidelines. In doing this, NEMA contributes to social-economic development in the country.

Every development program concerning the environment should first seek authorization from the government body before it commences to be established.
