Uganda Cranes suffered a heavy 1-2 defeat at the mercy of Algeria Desert Foxes in their fourth Group G game of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers played at Namboole National Stadium on Monday evening.

Industrious midfielder Travis Mutyaba gave the Cranes the lead in the 10th minute when he pounced on a poor clearance by the Desert Foxes defender and sped past him before he struck a low thunderous shot into the bottom corner sparking wild celebrations from the fans.

Uganda Cranes had the chance to double the lead before halftime (39th minute) when Steven Mukwala’s curler after good attacking work from right back Kenneth Ssemakula went just a few inches wide.

On resuming for the second half, in the 47th Aouar Houssem struck from an acute angle for Algeria leveling the game at 1-all.
Lyon’s Said Benrahma sealed the victory for the Desert Foxes following defensive errors committed by Uganda Cranes centrebacks who were vividly seen crawling in front of their own goal.
The defeat is Uganda Cranes’ second in this campaign following an earlier loss they conceded against Guinea. The Cranes remain on six points as Algeria Desert Foxes move to nine leading the group.
Uganda Cranes accumulated six points having won against Somalia and Botswana in their last games that were played at Mandela National Stadium on Friday in Namboole.

For Algeria, the win signifies a return to form after their previous home defeat against Guinea, boosting their campaign for World Cup qualification.
