The government of Malawi is mourning the demise of vice president Dr. Saulos Chilima and other dignitaries who parished in a plane crash while on their way for the burial of a former government official.

Dr. Saulos Chilima and nine other occupants boarded a 35-year-old Dornier 228 military plane while on their journey.

However, due to the bad weather the plane could not land at its right destination. The plane lost direction and could no longer be traced by the radar system.

The plane was reported missing shortly after  10 AM on Monday 10th, 2024. A quick search was mounted and a wreckage of the Dornier 228 military aircraft was discovered in the Chikangwa forest with no survivors .

“I can only imagine how much pain and anguish you all must be having at this point in time, Chilima was a distinctive man of honour , a great father and husband as well as a great patriot who has served the nation selflessly. I consider it one of the greatest honour to be deputies by him in the last four years of my presidency,” the President said while addressing journalists.
                       Other notable figures who perished in the plane crash include Lucas Kapheni, Chisomo Chimaneni, Shanil Dzimbiri, Dan Kanyemba, Abdul Lapukeni, colonel Sambalopa, Major Salemani, and Major Aidin whom the president described as great men and women of the nation.
President Lazarus Chaqwera has directed that the nation observe 21 days of national mourning for the deaths of all the people who were on board on the military aircraft.
And ordered all national flags to fly at half-mast.
